How much time are you spending on social media sites? Too much? Not enough? Social media can be highly effective for building relationships, staying abreast of news and trends in your industry, and for search engine optimization purposes. But too much of it and it can be a time sucker.
A few minutes on Twitter can easily turn into an hour. A quick stop into Facebook can take you on a journey through several websites because you click a link and then another and then another…
How do you make the most of social media sites for your small business? The goal is to manage time spent so that you are productive but also to make the most of social media as a marketing tool.
Here are a few suggestions:

1. Schedule social media time

A small business person’s day is hectic. You should take time out every day and make sure that important things like prospecting, checking in with clients, and updating your sales pipeline tracker get accomplished. Social media is worthy of being part of your regular schedule.

I also like Friendfeed as it offers an easy way for me to see what my friends and followers across multiple social networks are broadcasting about. This is important both for gathering news and information about things that are important to you and your business but is also important in terms of being a good member of a social community who responds, “likes”, “shares”, and re-tweets their social network.

3. Leverage the sites that give you the most ROI.

After all, time is money. Check your statistics to see which sites get the most interaction, have the most followers, and which ones click through to your website most often. By being analytical with social media you’ll know where you should invest your valuable time.

4. Make sure you’re effectively using each social platform.

Familiarize yourself with the ins and outs of each social media platform. Social media can be a great marketing tool if you know how to use it. Otherwise, you may miss out on opportunities.
Also, be sure you fill out your profiles completely. Be sure to include as much information about your business, products, and services that each social media platform allows. If you make it easy for others to find you it increases the chances of followers, fans, and traffic to your business website.
Being a bit more strategic and analytical with your social marketing activities will help you manage your time more effectively and will help you determine where time is well spent.
